Noel Fielding Reveals Alison Hammond's Bake Off Rule Breach

Noel Fielding has openly admitted that his Great British Bake Off co-host Alison Hammond broke a strict set rule when she joined the popular baking programme, forcing her to "learn the hard way". The duo have presented the beloved Channel 4 show together since Alison replaced Matt Lucas in 2023, with Noel already seasoned from six prior series.

The Golden Rule of the Bake Off Tent

Despite the vibrant and mouth-watering displays that characterise the show, nearly everything on set is completely forbidden for consumption. Journalist Boudicca Fox Leonard visited the iconic tent at Welford Park in Berkshire to uncover behind-the-scenes secrets of the programme, which debuted in 2010.

There is one golden rule that all cast and crew must obey: "Don't eat the displays." This applies even though the set appears as delectable as a cricket cream tea, according to the journalist. Noel, aged 52, issued this caution while she was eyeing up sponge fingers, party rings, and jars of marshmallows, stating, "They are not to be touched. Alison found that out the hard way."

Why the Props Are Off-Limits

Much of what viewers see on screen is not fit for eating. Some items are constructed from polystyrene, while others have been sitting around for weeks, months, or even years, serving purely aesthetic purposes. Noel strongly discourages sampling any decorative elements, noting that even real items like hot cross buns become rock-hard over time.

He explained, "They are real. But feel them – they're like rock. You'd need gnashers like a nutcracker to eat them." Additionally, edible props are not spared once filming ends; a crew member revealed that real food must be stored away at night to prevent squirrels from eating it.

Alison Hammond's Role and Background

Alison, who has presented Bake Off for three series, quickly won over judges, contestants, and viewers with her bubbly personality. She brought a new zest to the tent during her debut, though she confessed to feeling jittery about joining such a cherished franchise. Upon landing the role, she said, "It's a massive privilege to be part of an iconic show."

Beyond Bake Off, Alison is no stranger to culinary TV, having appeared on Celebrity MasterChef and hosted cooking segments on daytime programmes like This Morning. She has also tested her mettle on reality shows such as I'm A Celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing.

Current Bake Off Ventures

Noel and Alison are currently back in action for The Great Celebrity Bake Off, raising funds for Stand Up to Cancer. Celebrities joining the baking battle include Molly-Mae Hague, JoJo Siwa, former I'm A Celebrity winner Vicky Pattison, radio host Scott Mills, and Ralf Little. The show airs on Channel 4, offering viewers a mix of entertainment and charitable support.
