A Place In The Sun stairs called 'death trap' by fans

A Place In The Sun viewers were alarmed by a steep staircase in a property shown by Ben Hillman, branding it a "death trap" as retiree Jacqueline searched for a home on the Greek island of Lefkada.

The Channel 4 programme returned on Tuesday (November 3) with presenter Ben Hillman helping Jacqueline, from Shropshire, find a property. With a top budget of £302,000 and retirement approaching, Jacqueline wanted a two- to three-bedroom house with a pool and scenic views.

Stone House with Mezzanine

After the first property failed to impress, Jacqueline was delighted by the second option: a stone-constructed house with its own pool, a courtyard and three bedrooms. Ben described the interior as a "huge open plan, living, dining, and kitchen area, with a mezzanine level above, and it's the perfect place to have family to stay," adding that all three bedrooms come with their own en suite shower room.

However, viewers at home raised concerns about the precipitous staircase leading to the mezzanine level. On X, one person wrote: "Death stairs!" Another added: "I'd break my neck either going up there or coming down." A third commented: "The stairs (ladder) up to the mezzanine," alongside a shocked face emoji, while someone else said: "It's a no from me!"

Concerns Shared On Screen

Jacqueline and her sister-in-law Linda also voiced concerns as they climbed the staircase. Jacqueline remarked: "These are quite steep." Linda confessed: "I don't really like these stairs. I have to say, there's not a lot to get hold of."

Despite her reservations, Jacqueline said the property was still in the running. By the end of the episode, however, she had chosen not to proceed with any offers, telling Ben she planned to wait until her UK property sold and to return to the island for another look.

A Place In The Sun airs Monday to Friday at 6pm on Channel 4.
