The four-part docuseries The Cult of NatureBoy, released earlier this year, is gradually being discovered by growing numbers of viewers on Disney+, where all episodes are streaming exclusively.
The series centres on emerging social media personality Eligio Bishop, also known as Nature Boy. According to its synopsis, he uses his platforms to draw followers into a collective he called Carbon Nation, urging them to leave their families behind and embrace his vision.
Viewers caught off guard
Many who have watched it admit they knew little about the subject beforehand, but could not have anticipated the twists that emerge. One viewer turned to social media to describe the series, writing: "The Cult of Nature Boy is hands down one of the most insane true crime watches I've seen in a while."
They added: "It turns into something way darker, way faster than you expect. And the wildest part? This wasn't hidden. People were watching in real time. It's disturbing, frustrating, and honestly kind of mind-blowing. Go watch it. You'll be glued to your screen and questioning everything."
Another posted: "What on earth have I just watched? If you've not seen it yet, Disney+ have brought out a four part documentary and it's called The Cult of NatureBoy. I'm telling you now right, this is one of the most bizarre documentaries I've watched."
Sinister viewing
Audiences have compared the subject matter to Louis Theroux's Manosphere documentary, which also explored controversial social media influencers. However, viewers acknowledge that The Cult of NatureBoy makes for far more sinister viewing, with some stunned by certain footage.
One person warned: "I need to warn you because some of the things you see on it....It's one of the maddest things I've watched." Another admitted: "Watching it left me disgusted and enraged the whole time."
Critical response
The series received limited critical coverage on debut and holds no rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, some published reviews have described it as "chilling" and "ultimately satisfying", according to OK!.
