The period crime drama Miss Scarlet and the Duke has been praised by viewers as an "unexpected gem" and is available to stream for free. Four series of the show can be watched on U, while the fifth series is available to buy on Prime Video.
Plot and setting
The drama follows Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips), who finds herself nearly destitute on the streets of Victorian London after her father's sudden death. She attempts to take over her late father's private investigation business, battling the male-dominated world of detective work.
In her new role, Eliza reconnects with childhood friend William Wellington (Stuart Martin), a Scotland Yard police officer who frequently supports her during investigations.
Viewer reception
The programme has achieved an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.7/10 on IMDb. One satisfied viewer on IMDb described the show as an "unexpected gem", adding: "This has been a very welcome addition to a time-worn genre, with interesting sets, great costumes, and an authentic period feel."
Another viewer commented: "I stumbled across this show whilst looking for something to watch. I wasn't familiar with the actors playing the main characters but I thought they were great. It had a really interesting story and beautiful Dublin backdrop posing as Victorian London."
However, not all viewers were equally impressed. One dissatisfied watcher stated: "The premise was fine, but I can not imagine a poorer execution in the script. The situations were horribly-contrived - think Lifetime Channel."
The first four seasons of the show can be streamed for free on U.
