Stranger Things Animated Spin-Off First Look Divides Fans Amid Major Cast Overhaul
Netflix has officially released the first look at the highly anticipated animated spin-off series Stranger Things: Tales from '85, sparking intense debate among dedicated fans. Some enthusiasts are boldly claiming that the initial preview appears "better than season 5" of the original show, while others express concerns over significant cast changes and character representation.
New Adventure Set in Winter 1985 Hawkins
The new series is confirmed to be set between the events of the second and third seasons of the main Stranger Things storyline. According to the official synopsis, Stranger Things: Tales from '85 transports viewers back to Hawkins in the winter of 1985, where snow blankets the town and the horrors of the Upside Down are beginning to fade.
Our familiar heroes—Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max—have settled into a semblance of normal life, enjoying Dungeons & Dragons, snowball fights, and quiet days. However, beneath the icy surface, a terrifying new threat awakens, leaving fans to speculate whether it originates from the Upside Down, Hawkins Lab, or an entirely unknown source. The heroes must race against time to solve this mystery and save Hawkins once more.
Showrunner Insights and Creative Inspirations
Showrunner and writer Eric Robles provided insight into the creative vision behind the spin-off, describing it as a fusion of "Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter." He elaborated that this combination gives rise to the unique creatures inhabiting this new narrative world.
One such creature is a shark-like entity that hides within the snow, directly inspired by the classic film Jaws. Robles shared, "I grew up watching that movie, and we play with the same trope in the sense that underneath all that snow, there’s something lurking, and you just never know where that thing’s going to come out and grab you."
Major Cast Changes and New Additions
In a significant development, Netflix has confirmed that the main cast from the original series will not be returning for the animated spin-off. Instead, a completely new voice cast has been assembled:
- Eleven voiced by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt
- Mike voiced by Luca Diaz
- Will voiced by Benjamin Plessala
- Dustin voiced by Braxton Quinney
- Lucas voiced by Elisha “EJ” Williams
- Max voiced by Jolie Hoang-Rappaport
Additionally, supporting characters will be portrayed by new voice actors, with lysia Reiner as Karen Wheeler, Alessandra Antonelli as Nancy Wheeler, and Brett Gibson taking on the role of Hopper.
The trailer also introduces a brand new character to the group: pink-haired Nikki Baxter, voiced by Odessa A’zion, known for her roles in Marty Supreme, I Love LA, and Until Dawn.
Fan Reactions: Praise and Criticism
Fan reactions to the first look have been sharply divided across social media platforms. Many viewers expressed optimism about the spin-off's potential quality compared to the final season of the main series.
One enthusiastic fan commented, "It looks so much better than SEASON 5." Another agreed, stating, "This show will be so much better than season 5." A third simply exclaimed, "This looks so good!!!!!! Can't wait to watch it."
However, other fans raised concerns, particularly regarding the treatment of character Will Byers. Multiple comments highlighted what they perceive as continued sidelining of the character.
One user quipped, "So we’re back to side-lining Will. Great." Another added, "Will being side-lined not even as a main character, but practically a side character now. Like not a single line in that entire trailer? What else is new though."
Release Details and Anticipation
Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is scheduled to begin streaming on Netflix from April 23. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build, with fans eagerly debating whether this animated adventure will surpass the original series' final season or fall short of expectations.
