Netflix has released a first look at its upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo remake, but fans are divided over the appearance of the titular Great Dane. The 22-second preview, released on Monday, shows a dog from a first-person perspective before revealing it in the arms of a young Shaggy, played by Tanner Hagen.
While some praised Hagen's portrayal, critics argued the dog looked nothing like the original cartoon character. One Instagram user wrote: 'SCOOBY IS A GREAT DANE!!!!!! How do you mess up something so simple?????' Another commented: 'That is NOT Mr. Doo!' Some suggested the dog resembled a Labrador rather than a Great Dane.
However, others defended the design, noting that Great Dane puppies have naturally floppy ears, unlike the pointed ears seen in the cartoon. One fan argued: 'That's what a Great Dane looks like as a puppy. Scooby is a Great Dane.' Another added: 'Puppy Scoob is so cute.'
Titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, the eight-part series is scheduled for a 2027 release and is described as a modern reimagining of the franchise. The show follows teenagers Daphne, Shaggy, Velma, and Fred as they investigate a supernatural murder witnessed by a Great Dane puppy. Voice actor Frank Welker, who has voiced Scooby since 2002, will reprise his role.
The cast includes Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake. Filming is currently underway in Atlanta. The original series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, premiered in 1969 and spawned numerous films and spin-offs.
