Some Sky customers are facing a sudden change to their streaming setup. From August 3, the NOW platform will stop working on a range of older devices, leaving affected users unable to watch content unless they upgrade their hardware.
Which devices are affected?
The devices losing support include the NOW TV Smart Box (4500SK), Roku Streaming Stick (3500X), Roku Box (2700X), Roku Box (2710X) and Roku Box (2720X). Anyone using one of these gadgets under their TV will need to buy something new to keep tuning in.
The move is not directly a decision by Sky. Instead, Roku is ending support for its ageing hardware, which has a knock-on effect for NOW. The NOW TV Smart Box is also affected because it was developed in partnership with Roku.
Apple device owners also affected
According to reports, NOW will soon stop working on the iPhone 7 and earlier models, along with the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. The reason: NOW will only support devices capable of running iOS 16 or later. Since these older iPhones and iPads cannot be updated to Apple's newer software, they will no longer be able to access the streaming service.
If you are still using one of these ageing Apple devices to watch NOW, it may be time to consider an upgrade.
What still works
The good news is that NOW still works on the vast majority of modern smart TVs, streaming sticks, games consoles and current Roku devices.
