The beloved television travel competition, Race Across the World, is making a highly anticipated return to BBC One with a thrilling new series. This installment features five intrepid teams embarking on an extraordinary 12,000-kilometer race across Europe and Asia, marking the most expansive and challenging route in the show's history.
A Joke That Became Reality
Among the competitors are a father and daughter duo from Northern Ireland, Andrew and Molly, who have openly admitted that their entry into the competition began as "a joke gone too far." The pair, who share a remarkably close bond, decided to apply on a whim after seeing an advertisement pop up on social media, never expecting it to lead to this life-changing adventure.
The Epic Route and Challenges
Dubbed the most extreme race yet, the journey will traverse diverse landscapes and climates, starting in Palermo, Sicily, and culminating in the remote village of Hatgal on the shores of Lake Hövsgöl in northern Mongolia. Teams will follow sections of the ancient Silk Road, passing through countries including Italy, Greece, Türkiye, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia.
Contestants must navigate temperatures ranging from a sweltering 30 degrees Celsius in Mediterranean regions to a frigid –20°C in subarctic areas. All this must be accomplished on a strict budget of less than £26 per person per day, adding a layer of financial strategy to the physical and mental demands of the race.
Meet the Father-Daughter Team
Molly, a 23-year-old junior doctor, and her father Andrew, a 54-year-old geography teacher, hail from a rural area in Northern Ireland. Their participation is driven by a desire to strengthen their relationship and prove Molly's independence as she embarks on her medical career. Molly expressed that while she may not need her father physically present as much anymore, she values him as a confidant and friend.
Andrew described Molly as his best friend after his wife, highlighting their deep connection and shared enthusiasm for the outdoors. He sees this race as a dream come true, fulfilling a long-held desire to go backpacking, which his wife has no interest in pursuing.
Surprise and Inspiration
The duo anticipates that their involvement will shock their local community, given their quiet, rural background. Andrew hopes to inspire others by demonstrating that adventures and new experiences are accessible to everyone, regardless of their profession or circumstances. As a geography teacher, he is particularly excited to apply his knowledge in real-world settings and showcase a side of himself beyond the classroom.
Armed with good luck charms like a crucifix and rosary beads, and with their town's colours adorning their backpacks, Andrew and Molly are focused on enjoying the experience rather than solely winning. However, they acknowledge the appeal of victory, following in the footsteps of last year's mother and son winners, Tom and Caroline.
Race Across the World premieres on BBC One on Thursday, April 2 at 8pm, with episodes available on BBC iPlayer, promising viewers an unforgettable journey of endurance, bonding, and discovery.
