Paul Mescal's early TV thriller 'The Deceived' is now available on Netflix, offering fans a chance to see the Oscar-nominated actor in a gripping mystery series. The four-part drama originally aired on Channel 5 in 2020, the same year Mescal rose to fame with 'Normal People'.
Created by Lisa McGee, best known for 'Derry Girls', the series follows university fresher Ophelia Marsh (Emily Reid) who falls for her charismatic English lecturer Michael Callaghan (Emmett J Scanlan). When he disappears, Ophelia discovers that Michael's wife, novelist Roisin (Catherine Walker), has died in a house fire.
Mescal plays Sean, a local builder and volunteer firefighter who finds Roisin's body and befriends Ophelia. The Guardian described the show as a 'cosy thriller', noting that while it isn't hugely innovative, it is a pleasure to watch. Viewers have praised the series, with one IMDb user calling it 'a brilliant modern take on Daphne Du Maurier' and another saying it is 'truly excellent'.
Fans of Mescal's work in 'Normal People', 'Gladiator II', and 'Aftersun' should add this thriller to their Netflix watchlist. The series also features 'Derry Girls' star Louisa Harland in a major role.
