Paramount has won the rights to broadcast the UEFA Champions League in the UK and Germany from the 2027-28 season, following a heated auction. The deal, reported to cost well over $1.3 billion, runs until 2031 and marks a major expansion of Paramount's sports portfolio in Europe.
Under the agreement, Amazon Prime will have first pick of Tuesday matches, while Paramount will show all other games in the UK. This means UK viewers will need another subscription to watch Champions League football, joining existing services like Sky, TNT, Amazon, and DAZN. It remains unclear whether Paramount will launch a new channel or use its existing platforms, such as Channel 5, for coverage.
The move comes as Paramount continues to invest in sports broadcasting. Its UK channel, Channel 5, recently secured a raft of live NFL games. Meanwhile, Comcast-owned Sky announced it has secured rights to all Europa and Conference League games from the 2027-28 season, taking over from TNT Sports, which currently holds those rights in the UK.
In Spain, Telefonica (Movistar) is reported to have secured rights to most Champions League games until 2031 in a deal worth $1.6 million, with Paramount also having shown interest. The auction was run by UC3, a joint venture between UEFA and the European Clubs Association, alongside commercial rights distributor Relevent Football Partners.
Paramount's Champions League coverage on CBS in the US has been popular, featuring presenter Kate Abdo and pundits Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry, and Micah Richards. The studio is also reportedly preparing a massive bid to buy TNT Sports owner Warner Bros Discovery.
