Netflix's Firebreak: A Nerve-Wracking Spanish Thriller Packed with Twists

Netflix has released a new Spanish thriller, Firebreak, which has quickly captivated viewers since its debut on 20th February. Directed by David Victori, the film is an intense psychological thriller that follows a family facing an impossible moral dilemma.

The story centres on Mara, played by Belén Cuesta, whose young daughter goes missing in the forest near their home. As a raging fire threatens to consume the area, Mara races against time to find her child, with sinister hints that the inferno may not be a natural disaster.

Review site Tom's Guide praised Firebreak as one of the most intense movies of 2026 so far, calling it 'packed with twists' and noting its 'high stakes, emotional urgency, and a constant sense that the situation could tip in an even darker direction at any moment'. A Rotten Tomatoes review described it as 'nerve-wracking and intense', though some family drama may frustrate certain viewers.

Viewers on Letterboxd and IMDb have also responded positively, with one Letterboxd user writing: 'Honestly I was glued to the screen the entire time... that ending caught me completely off guard.' Another commented: 'This movie had me guessing every second only for me to be completely wrong!' An IMDb user called it 'mind and emotion bending', praising its unique storyline and plot twist.

Firebreak joins a line of successful Spanish productions on Netflix, such as Money Heist and The Platform, and looks set to become the streaming giant's next international blockbuster.
