Netflix's latest true crime documentary, A Friend, A Murderer, has been climbing the streaming platform's charts since its release on March 5. The three-part series explores a series of crimes that shocked a community in Denmark, including one of the most talked-about mysteries in Danish history.
The documentary focuses on the disappearance of a teenage girl, which transforms a close-knit community into distrust and fear. Three friends recount their memories of the crimes that changed their lives. An official synopsis states: 'Deep friendships and horrific crimes intersect in a quiet corner of Denmark after a teenage girl disappears.'
When the perpetrator is finally caught after eight years, it brings relief to the town, but for the three friends, it marks the beginning of their worst nightmare: the person they feared for so long turns out to be one of their closest friends. During the trial, chilling realities are discovered, leaving the friends questioning their own judgement.
Parish priest Anna Helleberg Kluge commented: 'As a priest, I have seen how the local community was struck by fear, grief, anger and suspicion. No one knew who they could trust.' She added that she has also seen small signs that the community can find its way back.
The documentary has been branded a 'disturbing' watch by viewers. One true crime fan on TikTok described it as 'one of the most disturbing but well shot documentaries I've watched probably this year so far,' urging others to watch it. Another said it was 'insane' and 'you cannot miss this.'
A Friend, A Murderer is currently number two in Netflix's 'Top 10 Series Today' list. It is available to stream on Netflix.
