Netflix has removed a number of titles from its UK library, including The Hunger Games and Final Destination films, but the most notable departure is the 2018 psychological thriller The Nightingale. Directed by Jennifer Kent of The Babadook fame, the film follows a young Irish convict seeking revenge against colonial forces in 1825 Tasmania, featuring graphic depictions of rape and murder.
The Nightingale originally sparked walkouts during its cinema release due to its intense brutality. Despite this, it holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics described it as “the most shocking film of the year” and “an extremely difficult film to watch,” with some questioning whether the violence was excessive.
In addition, Netflix has also removed Lost, the acclaimed sci-fi series about survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. The show, which ran for six seasons, is considered one of the best TV series of all time. UK viewers can still watch it for free on ITVX or via a premium subscription on Disney+.
These removals are part of Netflix’s ongoing rotation of content, which regularly sees titles added and removed from the platform.
