An action-packed thriller that viewers claim will 'mess with your head' has garnered a fresh wave of fans on Netflix. The film, originally released in 2008, is rapidly ascending Netflix's most-watched list, with enthusiasts drawing comparisons to Mission Impossible and lauding its 'superb' ensemble and 'thrilling' plot twists.
Directed by D.J. Caruso, the movie boasts an array of high-profile actors, led by Shia LaBeouf and featuring The White Lotus star Michelle Monaghan. The cast also includes Rosario Dawson, Anthony Mackie and Billy Bob Thornton. Despite a meagre critic score of just 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience rating stands significantly higher at 62%. Since its debut, some fans have suggested this overlooked treasure was actually ahead of its time due to its AI themes.
The synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes states: 'Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) and Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) are two strangers whose lives are suddenly thrown into turmoil by a mysterious woman they have never met.' It continues: 'Threatening their lives and family, the unseen caller uses everyday technology to control their actions and push them into increasing danger. As events escalate, Jerry and Rachel become the country's most-wanted fugitives and must figure out what is happening to them.'
Despite being panned by critics upon release, fans have since rallied in support of the film, leaving numerous positive reviews. One viewer reflected: 'This movie is worth watching. Especially considering where AI is headed. Solid acting all around as well.' Another concurred: 'Amazing movie and concept. Ahead of its time. Something that has the possibility of coming true. Shia LaBeouf's acting was amazing. The direction was amazing.'
Others lauded the storyline, with one guaranteeing the film 'will definitely mess with your head and it's high-tech', whilst another noted: 'This is a suspenseful thrilling movie. I was on the edge of my seat. Very clever and thought provoking.' A further viewer commented: 'This movie is nonstop action from start to finish! It is intense through each and every scene and the acting is superb! If you are a fan of action movies, this one is for you.'
Yet not everyone was impressed, as one critic remarked: 'A movie that tried to be serious and yet nearly failed on everything it set out to accomplish.' Another shared this view: 'A political thriller that's derivative and thinly plotted, with flawed acting and generic action.' Despite this, other enthusiasts described the film as 'epic' and even 'Mission impossible on Steroids', with one defender stating: 'This was a great movie. I don't understand all the naysayers.'
