Netflix's latest shark thriller, Thrash, has stormed to the top of the streaming service's global and UK film charts, amassing 37.7 million views in just three days since its release on April 10.
The film, directed by Tommy Wirkola, follows a coastal town devastated by a Category 5 hurricane, where stranded residents must survive floodwaters infested with aggressive sharks. Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor leads the cast as expectant mother Lisa, who goes into labour during the chaos. She is aided by Dakota (Whitney Peak), an agoraphobic young woman, while her marine biologist uncle Dale (Djimon Hounsou) races to rescue her and track the sharks.
Despite its commercial success, Thrash has divided critics, holding a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an even lower audience score of 24%. The Hollywood Reporter noted it 'stays afloat' as a bloody, dumb shark thriller, while The Guardian suggested it might help those with galeophobia.
Viewers have been more enthusiastic, with one IMDb user calling it a 'masterpiece' and another praising its suspense. The film is produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick, with Messick revealing that the idea to combine shark attacks with extreme weather had been in development for years.
