Netflix's Thrash Dominates Global Charts with Massive Viewership

Netflix's latest survival thriller, Thrash, has surged to the top of the streamer's worldwide and UK film charts, amassing an impressive 37.7 million views within just three days of its release. The film, which debuted on April 10, 2026, has captivated audiences with its high-stakes drama and intense action sequences.

A Star-Studded Cast in a Perilous Scenario

Led by Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor, who portrays expectant mother Lisa, the film unfolds in a coastal town ravaged by a Category 5 hurricane. As floodwaters rise, residents find themselves stranded and forced to survive not only the storm but also ferocious sharks that have infiltrated the town. Dynevor's character, in the midst of labour, is aided by Dakota, played by Whitney Peak, an agoraphobic young woman whose marine biologist uncle, Dale (Djimon Hounsou), races against time to rescue her while tracking the sharks.

The ensemble cast also includes Matt Nable, Andrew Lees, Alyla Browne, Stacy Clausen, Dante Ubaldi, Sami Afuni, and Chai Hansen, adding depth to the thrilling narrative.

Audience Acclaim and Critical Divide

Viewers have expressed overwhelming enthusiasm for Thrash, with many taking to online platforms to praise its suspenseful plot and strong performances. One IMDb user hailed it as a "masterpiece," noting, "Everything I wanted from a shark movie. The shark at the end is absolutely amazing. So stressed and anxiety was through the roof." Another viewer described it as "very suspenseful, had me on the edge of my seat," while a third appreciated Dynevor's commitment, stating, "She uses it as a stage to demonstrate that credibility is not dictated by genre or budget."

Despite its popularity, the film has received mixed reviews from critics. It currently holds a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score at just 24%. The Hollywood Reporter commented, "Nothing in Thrash is going to wow Steven Spielberg, and its adherence to plot logic is elastic to say the least. But as bloody, dumb shark thrillers go, it stays afloat." Similarly, The Guardian suggested it might help those with galeophobia, saying, "Perhaps the best use of Thrash is to help cure those with galeophobia, proving that they're really not that scary after all."

Behind the Scenes and Production Insights

Thrash is produced by acclaimed director Adam McKay, known for Don't Look Up and The Big Short, alongside Kevin Messick. In an interview with Tudum, Messick revealed that director Tommy Wirkola pitched the idea by combining elements of extreme weather and shark movies, knowing McKay's fondness for the genre. "Tommy had this idea. He knew that McKay loves shark movies, and at some point, we were going to make one," Messick explained. "And even then, several years ago, he was like, 'What if we combine some of these things that are happening with the weather, with storms, with a shark movie?'"

This innovative approach has clearly resonated with audiences, making Thrash a standout hit in Netflix's lineup. The 90-minute film continues to attract viewers seeking an adrenaline-fueled experience, solidifying its place as a must-watch in the streaming world.
