Netflix's upcoming horror series, The Fall of the House of Usher, has garnered a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release. The show, directed by Mike Flanagan, known for The Haunting of Hill House and Gerald's Game, adapts Edgar Allan Poe's 1839 short story with a fresh, dark twist.
The plot follows Roderick Usher, played by Bruce Greenwood, the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, who confronts his past as his children die in mysterious and brutal ways. The series features a host of Flanagan regulars, including Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, and Rahul Kohli, alongside Mark Hamill.
Carla Gugino, who portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, described the show as 'bats**t crazy in the best possible way,' blending dark humour with emotional depth. She added that Verna acts as an 'executor of fate or karma.'
Early reviews have been positive, with Empire calling it a 'dark-hearted horror story that’s horribly good fun' and Inverse noting it as 'an epic family tragedy that caps off his Netflix era with a brutally dark note.' The Fall of the House of Usher premieres on Netflix on 12 October.
