Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz faced a devastating setback on Monday's episode of 'Fletcher's Family Farm' as their pigs sold at auction for a significant loss. The former Emmerdale star had hoped to gauge the market for his pigs, but the result left him feeling 'dejected'.
In the episode, Kelvin revealed that raising the pigs cost around £150 per head in feed alone, but the auction yielded only £70 for two pigs and even less for the others, resulting in a loss of approximately £80 per pig. He noted that the sparse attendance reflected the tough times for pig farmers.
Kelvin expressed his frustration, saying, 'I can't help but feel a bit dejected. It is such a shame, and it's not just ours; collectively, the price that they all go for is just so low, and you think to yourself, How is anyone making any money like this?' He added that breaking the news to Liz would not be easy.
Upon hearing the sale figures, Liz responded, 'That doesn't even cover the food bill,' and concluded, 'We can't take the rest of them to market, it is a pointless waste of time.' Despite the setback, Kelvin insisted he is 'not giving up hope'.
