Katy Keene, the Riverdale spin-off cancelled after just one season in the US, will air in the UK for the first time on BBC iPlayer later this month. The series, based on Archie comics, follows four New Yorkers pursuing dreams in fashion, Broadway, music, and the arts.
The show stars Lucy Hale as fashion designer Katy Keene, alongside Ashleigh Murray as singer Josie McCoy, Jonny Beauchamp as performer Jorge Lopez/Ginger, and Julia Chan as 'It Girl' Pepper Smith. Each episode runs 40 minutes, with 13 episodes in the first series. The CW confirmed it would not commission a second season.
Following the cancellation news, lead actress Lucy Hale addressed fans in an emotional Instagram video. She described the show as 'a total joy from top to bottom' and 'one of the highlights of my life,' while struggling to hold back tears. Hale encouraged viewers to watch the series on its streaming home, HBO Max, in the US.
Hale noted that she has experienced show cancellations before, calling each instance 'heartbreaking.' She expressed gratitude for the role and the cast and creators, Michael Grassi and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. 'Maybe it just was not the right time for it? I don't know, I'm confused,' she said, adding that she believes the show is 'timeless.'
