A BBC psychological thriller originally broadcast in 2019 has been hailed as "brilliant" and a "must-watch" ahead of its arrival on Netflix this week. The four-part series, titled The Victim, follows a grieving mother whose son was murdered, and is already available to watch on ITVX.
The recommendation comes from TikTok user Danni, whose account focuses on television programmes. In a video, she described the show as "one of the best I have ever seen" and urged viewers to watch it immediately. She explained that lead character Anna Dean, played by Trainspotting's Kelly Macdonald, sees a man she believes is responsible for her son's killing, but other characters suspect it may be a case of mistaken identity.
"It's got a bit of everything. It's so sad, it leaves you guessing... it's just such a brilliant watch," Danni said. She confirmed the series is an original BBC production, adding: "It is on ITV now and it will be on Netflix."
The official synopsis reveals that Anna is accused of revealing her son's killer's new identity online and conspiring to have him murdered. Hard-working family man Craig Myers becomes the victim of a vicious attack after being identified online as a notorious child murderer. The story is told through the eyes of the plaintiff and the accused, and offers a constantly surprising and twisting perspective on who is really "the victim".
Filmed in Edinburgh and Port Glasgow, the drama also stars John Hannah and James Harkness. It opens on day one of a criminal trial in Edinburgh's High Court, covering both the legal proceedings and events leading up to the trial.
The Victim will be available on Netflix from March 7. Previous viewers have been effusive in their praise, with one writing: "The Victim is the best drama ever, my fave for years."
