Netflix has postponed its live event 'Skyscraper Live', featuring free solo climber Alex Honnold attempting to scale Taipei 101 in Taiwan, due to rain. The event will now take place on Saturday, 24 January at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT), which corresponds to Sunday morning in Taiwan.
In a statement, Netflix said: 'Due to weather, we are unable to proceed with today's SkyscraperLIVE event. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. Safety remains our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding.'
Honnold shared the news on Instagram from Taipei, saying: 'I sadly will not get to climb the building today because it's raining. I suppose climbing is always at the mercy of nature. That's just how it goes… I'm going to go for a hike and have a nice day out. But sadly, can't climb a skyscraper when it's raining, so tune in tomorrow.'
Earlier, Plimsoll Productions CEO Grant Mansfield and Netflix unscripted VP Jeff Gaspin had discussed the possibility of a weather delay. The January date was chosen as it falls in Taiwan's dry season, but rain was still possible. The forecast for the rescheduled date predicts 'sunny and pleasant' conditions in Taipei.
Honnold is renowned for his free solo ascents, including El Capitan's 'Freerider' route in Yosemite, documented in the Oscar-winning film 'Free Solo'. The two-hour 'Skyscraper Live' will see him attempt to climb Taipei 101, the 11th tallest building in the world at 1,667 feet.
