New Generation of Royals Could Sideline Harry and Meghan
Young Royals Could Sideline Harry and Meghan

A new generation of young royals is quietly winning public admiration, and this shift could allow Prince William to permanently sever his strained relationship with Prince Harry, according to commentator Chris Riches.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may still attract public interest, but a raft of next-generation royals could soon render the couple irrelevant. If Harry and Meghan were considered a safe pair of hands, they would be in talks with King Charles about potential roles on behalf of the monarchy. After their 2018 wedding and honeymoon period, they seemed destined to support Prince William when he ascended the throne. However, the Sandringham Summit, Megxit, and a series of critical remarks about Charles, Camilla, William, and Catherine have fostered deep distrust.

Failed Reconciliation Attempts

There was a glimmer of hope when the couple returned to the UK this summer that peace talks might be underway. That now appears unlikely. King Charles reminded the world that the pair were "akin to private citizens" and not working royals, while the Sussexes responded that they preferred to be known as "public figures." This exchange was the clearest indication that wounds between the palace and the Sussexes remain unhealed.

Harry and Meghan's camp has maintained that the Royal Family may need them more than they need The Firm. But social media and poll data suggest otherwise, revealing other royals who could step up in the future. Zara and Mike Tindall have proved a safe pair of hands, and their equestrian commercial interests make them a perfect fit for William and Kate to represent the family in racing or horse-related matters.

Rising Stars in the Family

Edward and Sophie, alongside Princess Anne, have proved invaluable during recent turmoils involving Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Their son James, Earl of Wessex, 18, is studying at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester after completing A-levels at Radley College, and is likely to go into farming. Their daughter Lady Louise, 22, has shown the heart, poise, and modesty of Princess Anne, making her a remarkable potential working royal.

Another couple who could step up are Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips, 48, and his new bride, former NHS nurse Harriet, 46. They met in 2022 after her daughter Georgina joined the same hockey team as Peter's children, and wed last summer at Princess Anne's Gatcombe estate. Harriet told Hello magazine: "I can look to Catherine for advice and guidance. She's very open-hearted, and I would always feel comfortable asking her if I needed advice about something."

A New Era for the Monarchy

Recalling her first meeting with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Harriet added: "I've had an incredible experience being welcomed in. We happened to be on holiday at the same place in the Scilly Isles. It was great because the children were all jumping into the water at the same time. It was very casual but there is a clear level of respect there."

Having spent 24 years as an NHS nurse, Harriet is now patron for Home-Start Cotswolds, a charity offering "vital, practical and non-judgmental support." She seems level-headed, down-to-earth, and serious about helping others. William and Catherine may well be thinking 'who needs Harry and Meghan after all?'
