Newcastle United are on a grim run of form, losing five of their last seven Premier League matches while scoring seven goals and conceding 14. Loud boos greeted the half-time and full-time whistles at St James' Park last night in a sorry 1-0 defeat to Everton.
The Magpies produced a performance devoid of creativity, control or confidence as the mood around the club further soured. Jaissle is under increasing pressure and faces a tough five-game run - Fulham (A), Arsenal (H), Brighton (A), Man United (H) and Sunderland (H) - that could prove his undoing.
Potential replacements without compensation
Express Sport look at some unemployed managers Newcastle could immediately appoint to replace Jaissle, without paying compensation, if the German does lose his job any time soon.
Arne Slot may have been sacked by Liverpool back in May but the 48-year-old is still a Premier League-winning manager. There were enough mitigating circumstances in his second season at Anfield to suggest Slot is more than capable of having success elsewhere in England. Perhaps the Dutchman could turn Newcastle back into a side who are more fun to watch.
Julian Nagelsmann would be on the 'dream' side of the scale. The German, still just 39, was once one of the most in-demand coaches in the world and will be keen for a new opportunity after failing as Germany's manager. But he might be holding out for a team competing in the Champions League, such as Manchester United.
International and European options
Gareth Southgate feels less likely, given he has not managed in the Premier League since 2009 and has been out of work over two years since leaving England after the Euro 2024 final. His style of football was not overly popular as Three Lions boss so he'd need to win Newcastle fans over. But he's a candidate because of the harmonious job he did in charge of the national team.
Ernesto Valverde is a title winner who has never coached in England. He took Barcelona to two La Liga titles and Olympiacos to three Greek Super League triumphs. The 62-year-old only left Athletic Club, after a third spell in charge, at the end of last season when he stepped down. He could be an interesting option.
Antonio Conte is also a dream target and a former Premier League winner. He left Napoli in May after delivering the club a Serie A title 12 months earlier. Conte has won the Italian league five times with three different clubs and took Chelsea to the 2016-17 title and the 2017-18 FA Cup. The Italian would be a headline-grabbing get for the Magpies.
