The trio held an urgent summit at the Scottish estate to decide how to handle the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's homecoming.
Royal biographer Duncan Larcombe said the discussions led to a potentially explosive decision, with senior royals feeling they had "no choice" but to request a face-to-face meeting with Harry to establish firm boundaries. The strategy echoes the 2020 Sandringham Summit convened by the late Queen Elizabeth II, where Harry was told he could not operate as a "half-in, half-out" working royal.
Concerns Over Harry's Return
A source told Woman & Home: "William is extremely concerned about what Harry's return to Britain will mean for working members of the family. It may well be too risky for them to just sit back and let Harry make the next move."
"There are suggestions that they feel they have no choice but to ask the Duke of Sussex for a face-to-face meeting to discuss the future and lay down, or at least reiterate, some of the rules," the source added. "Whether Harry will agree to meeting them all is up for debate, but it is felt that the King and William have little option but to try."
Palace courtiers fear Harry and Meghan Markle could overshadow the daily work of the Prince and Princess of Wales through high-profile engagements with organisations such as WellChild and the upcoming Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, any confrontation between the estranged brothers carries significant risks, he warned. William reportedly remains deeply hurt by Harry's explosive interviews and his tell-all memoir Spare, with insiders cautioning that the Prince of Wales worries secret details of any private meeting could leak to the media if negotiations turn hostile.
Despite the tension, experts have warned that Harry cannot afford to ignore the summons. According to Mr Larcombe, the source added: "Harry may be many things, but he is not stupid. He knows that if he remains at war with his brother, when the time comes for William to take the throne the consequences for him could be severe."
Potential Consequences
Speculation is growing that William could strip Harry of his Prince title once he becomes King, similar to how King Charles treated his own brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
