A large police presence remains in Stanley Park 11 days after the discovery of a woman's body in a bin bag. Merseyside Police were called to the park at around 5.25pm on August 28 after a member of the public found a black bin bag in bushes in the walled garden area. Officers attending found the body of a woman inside the bag. Early indications suggested she had been there for a number of weeks.
Identity still unknown
Detectives are still working to establish who she was. The woman is believed to be around 70 years old, approximately 5ft 2in tall and of slight build, with strawberry blonde hair. One of the most significant clues released is what she was wearing when found - a distinctive pink Nike T-shirt. Despite a huge response from the public, her identity remains a mystery.
Investigation details
Merseyside Police has received more than 120 witness reports and around 40 possible names as part of the investigation. Detectives have ruled out a number of lines of enquiry linked to that information. Forensic evidence has also failed to provide a breakthrough. A forensic examination established a DNA profile from the woman, but police confirmed on Friday that it produced no match when checked against the national database. Dental records have also been examined.
The ECHO understands the woman had no tattoos and was not wearing jewellery. Detectives have said there were no other key identifying features beyond the description already released.
Public tributes
Despite the lack of a breakthrough, a significant police presence remained in Stanley Park on Monday, September 7, as the investigation continued. In the days since the woman was found, members of the public have left floral tributes at the scene. One note, addressed to "the dear lady in the pink top", read: "We as a community are united in grief and deep sorrow for you. May you find the peace and justice you so deserve. Safe now in the arms of the angels and forever at rest."
