Trump's 'frog mouth' reveals feelings in Melania chat

Footage of Donald Trump and Melania Trump appearing to engage in a heated exchange at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix has generated widespread speculation. A viral 26-second recording from the Washington, D.C. event on Sunday (August 23) captures the President and First Lady seemingly discussing an unidentified matter that Melania appeared particularly passionate about.

Observers have suggested the interaction seemed strained, with numerous people insisting that the couple might have been experiencing a disagreement. According to body language expert Beth Dawson, though, the pair actually seemed to be in agreement regarding an unknown subject. Beth notes that, while the interaction was fleeting, "quite a lot was happening", clarifying: "I don't see a wife berating her husband, I see two people engaged on the same issue."

Body language analysis

This follows lip reader Jeremy Freeman's observation that Melania delivered a "snappy" remark to her husband during the viral moment. Beth explained: "I think Melania is angry about something but we actually see signs that he agrees with whatever it is she is angry about. Initially Donald Trump looks quite relaxed - he is leaning forward and clasping his hands together. This is his baseline posture. It's also interesting to see that they are sat close together and there doesn't look like there is animosity between them."

Beth continued by stating that Melania's body language throughout the footage demonstrates she is "tense and animated", with "no relaxed movements" visible whatsoever. She went on to elaborate: "She also moves and flicks her hair away from her face and this again shows irritation and animation. There is a lot of movement coming from her."

Signs of agreement

The body language expert described Trump's reaction to his wife as "interesting", especially due to how he leaned towards her and paid attention. Apparently in accordance with her remarks, the President can be seen nodding and, as Beth observes, "[he] sits slightly back and stretches his mouth laterally".

"A nod doesn't always mean someone agrees, it can mean that someone is saying, 'I'm listening' or 'go on' but it shows that he is acknowledging what she's saying," Beth explained. "What is interesting is the lateral lip stretch - his lips close and the mouth is stretched laterally and there is tension. This is actually what I call the 'frog' mouth. He sits back with the lateral lip stretch and this shows he is not happy with what she's said, but not necessarily with her. It shows discomfort with the topic."

Shared stance

She proceeded to note: "Melania's behaviour shows a questioning stance: she shrugs her shoulders; she opens her hands: it's almost as if she's asking how do we deal with this? And there is an interesting piece of behaviour when he answers her and she holds her hand up very briefly. This isn't to calm him down, this is to stop him from saying something, as she is aware that there are people within listening distance."

"People like to assume certain things about other people's relationships and there is a narrative that Melania is fulfilling a certain role. I'm looking at the observable behaviours and this shows two people who are actually on the same side," Beth added.
