Sarah Ferguson: Fear of the Dark Was 'Demons Inside Myself'

Sarah Ferguson has opened up about how traumatic periods in her life have affected her, revealing that her fear of the dark was actually a fear of her own inner struggles.

The former Duchess of York, who lived with her ex-husband Andrew at Royal Lodge for years after their divorce, has faced significant public backlash in recent months after being linked to the Epstein case along with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. After living abroad, she is now said to be returning to the UK.

Fear of the Dark Explained

In a 1996 interview with CTV, Ferguson said: “I sat up in bed and slept with my eyes open because I was so scared of the dark. I thought that if I slept with my eyes open, I could see any spooks coming towards me. I realized that my fear of the dark was my fear of the demons inside myself and the black treacle, my fears and anxieties that were inside myself.”

At the time, Sarah had experienced a traumatic divorce from Andrew. She concluded that her fears of the dark were the result of the trauma in her life at that period.

Memoir Rumours Surface

Sarah is rumoured to be working on a “tell-all” memoir, although no reports of this have yet been confirmed. Sources suggested in September that the former Duchess of York was just “days away” from reaching an agreement with a publisher, potentially putting the Royal Family on high alert.

The claims come as Princess Diana’s younger brother, Earl Spencer, has made a string of bombshell allegations in his new book, Swan Song, Diana, My Sister, which has reportedly sparked a row with King Charles.

Denials and Speculation

A source close to Sarah has hit back at the claims, suggesting she “has no plans to write any tell-all memoir”. Andrew Lownie, a royal historian who spent years researching the lives of Sarah and Andrew for his biography Entitled, believes there could be an ulterior motive behind the reports.

“She has been touting a book for months but I'm not convinced she will do it,” he told the Mirror, adding: “She will not want to endanger the future of her children.” He also claims: “My instinct is she has leaked the story as part of a negotiation with the Royal Family to take care of her. Let us see which publisher confirms the deal – if any.”
