Sam Fender marked his historic UK chart achievement by pulling pints at The Millstone pub in Gosforth on Saturday night, just days after performing to a massive crowd in the US.
Record-breaking achievement
The Rein Me In singer visited the well-known pub over a week after he and Grammy award-winning duet partner Olivia Dean broke a record that had stood for 73 years. Their single, which won Song of the Year at the Brits earlier this year, eclipsed Frankie Laine's 1953 chart-topper I Believe to achieve an impressive 19th week at the summit, taking the record for the longest non-consecutive number 1 in UK chart history.
From Lollapalooza to behind the bar
Before returning to Tyneside, Sam performed Rein Me In alongside Olivia at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, where fans gave him a rapturous reception. Staff at The Millstone were delighted to have him on Saturday, though they likely didn't expect him to end up behind the bar.
Sharing a photo of Sam pulling pints on Instagram, the pub wrote: 'WELL, THIS WAS A SURPRISE! We had a very familiar Geordie face visit us at The Millstone on Saturday… The one and only Sam Fender popped in for a few drinks — and didn’t just stop there… he even helped us out behind the bar! We’re not sure what was more impressive… the pulling of a pint or the fact we actually got him working for his drinks!'
Potential world record
The pub ended their post by telling Sam he was welcome to call in 'anytime' and he might soon have more to celebrate, as Rein Me In needs just a few more weeks at number 1 to beat the world record set by Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas is You, which has spent 22 weeks at the top of the US charts since its release in 1994.
