Ricky Gervais has been hailed for his generosity after a £100,000 donation to a rescue charity helped save a dog thrown from a city wall. The black labrador, named Hugo, was discovered with multiple fractures in Canterbury after being hurled from a wall. A witness rushed the injured animal to Flori's Friends Rescue, where staff recognised the severity of his injuries.
The charity used part of the donation, which Gervais made earlier this year, to fund Hugo's urgent surgery costing around £5,000. The rescue said the contribution has already transformed the lives of countless animals, including three dogs that received stem cell transplants and two paralysed dogs fitted with custom-made wheels.
Other beneficiaries include a cat named Tony, who required £9,000 worth of care for multiple infections and spinal problems, and a Yorkie called Georgie, who made a full recovery after £6,000 of specialist treatment. The charity described the impact of the donation over 16 weeks as 'extraordinary', with lives not merely saved but utterly transformed.
In a heartfelt message, Flori's Friends Rescue thanked Gervais, stating: 'Your compassion has made the seemingly impossible, possible.' Hugo is now on the path to recovery, no longer facing his ordeal alone.
