Queen Elizabeth II would not have trusted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's motive for returning to the UK if she were still alive, a royal expert has said. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are relocating to the UK by the end of August, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, enrolled in British schools to start in September.
The family will reportedly live in a private, non-royal residence. The location of their home and the children's schools will not be confirmed for security reasons. While there are a number of rumours swirling around about why the couple are returning to the UK, one royal expert has said that the late Queen would not have trusted the motive behind the return.
Expert's View on the Late Queen's Reaction
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Express, Richard Fitzwilliams said: "The late Queen was blindsided once by the Sussexes announcing they were stepping back from being senior working royals and Megxit was the result, when she refused their 'half in half out' demand. They later told her 'service is universal', which was an impertinence."
He added: "If she were still with us, I think she would have seen an echo of their behaviour to her then in the way they have treated King Charles, who only knew of their plans to relocate three days before they were announced. Since their children will be going to school here, they must have planned this for months, yet they saw him and the Queen at Highgrove for tea only last month and said nothing."
Reasons Behind the Doubts
The couple quit royal life in 2020, when Queen Elizabeth II was still alive, and moved to America, where they then went on to criticise the monarchy and Britain in general. It has already been confirmed that Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, will not become working royals again.
Fitzwilliams continued: "Queen Elizabeth would have been privy to a great deal we don't know about the Sussexes. Obviously, a reconciled Royal Family is stronger if there is a public royal rift, as there is here. However, the Queen valued loyalty. We know problems caused by the Sussexes blighted her final years. There is considerable debate over their reasons for this move, but I doubt Queen Elizabeth would have trusted the motives of a couple who behaved as badly and selfishly during the twilight of her reign as they did, monetising the royal links they so openly scorned."
Harry and Meghan have not publicly commented on their relocation back to Britain. It is believed the couple will be keeping their Montecito home, as well as their Portugal holiday pad.
