The Greek Royal Family has announced the death of Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark, a much-loved royal figure with deep ties to several European monarchies. She was 83 years old.
A Palace Announcement of Deep Sadness
A statement issued from the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid confirmed the princess passed away on Thursday, 15th January 2016, at 11:40 local time. She had been in declining health and died surrounded by loved ones at the Spanish royal residence. The palace indicated that details regarding her funeral procession would follow in due course.
Princess Irene was the younger sister of Queen Sofia of Spain, who recently cancelled all her public engagements due to her sister's fragile condition. The sisters were daughters of the late King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece. Their brother was the former King Constantine of Greece, who died in 2023.
A Life of Royal Connections and Devotion
Princess Irene, who never married, was exceptionally close to her sister Queen Sofia. After Sofia's marriage to the former King Juan Carlos of Spain, Irene moved to be near her, living in an apartment in Spain. She was a constant and supportive presence within the family.
Her royal lineage connected her not only to the Greek and Spanish thrones but also to the Danish Royal Family through her title. In recent years, her public appearances became less frequent due to her health. She was last seen publicly approximately a year ago, attending the Athens wedding of her nephew, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, in a wheelchair.
A Beloved Aunt and Family Figure
When in better health, Princess Irene was often photographed with her nephew, King Felipe VI of Spain, and his family, including Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia. She was described in the official announcement as a "beloved sister and aunt," highlighting her cherished role within the family.
The death of Princess Irene marks the passing of a significant figure from a generation of European royalty, whose life was defined by her close familial bonds and her quiet dignity away from the intense spotlight often shone on other royals.
