Netflix fans are discovering other 'horrible' true crime series after watching the latest film about Mackenzie Shirilla. The streamer's new release The Crash has quickly become the number one film among UK subscribers since its release last week. It has already been described by viewers as 'gut wrenching' and the 'most uncomfortable' true crime doc that some may find trouble watching.
According to Netflix's synopsis for the film, it opens after a car carrying three young adults slams into a brick building at 100 miles per hour in Strongsville, Ohio, leaving two lives lost and one sole survivor. The driver was 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla. She was driving her boyfriend, Dom, and his friend, Davion, home from a party when the unthinkable happened. Both Dom and Davion were declared dead at the scene. The film goes on to explore how what officers thought was a tragic accident quickly became uncovered as something much more sinister.
With the case being so extraordinary, fans are quickly discovering that The Crash is not the first time it has been given the documentary treatment. It has been the focus of other true crime series episodes at least twice before. One of those is in a season of Mean Girl Murders. That series puts the spotlight on real-life mysteries that explore the dark side of female connections and rivalry, and how these dynamics can lead to shocking acts of psychological and physical violence.
The episode of Mean Girl Murders focusing on Mackenzie Shirilla can be found in Season 2, Episode 7, titled 'Under the Influence'. Its synopsis explains: 'a tragic accident exposes the dark realities behind the glamorous life of an influencer, revealing the jealousy and rivalry in the quest for online fame.' Viewers have called the series 'insane' and 'unreal'. All episodes of the series can be found on HBO Max or via Discovery+.
The relatively new service can be accessed either via its dedicated app or via an add-on subscription through the Prime Video platform. Sky TV customers, or those who already have access to NOW entertainment pass, also have HBO Max included.
This isn't the only series that dedicates an episode to Mackenzie Shirilla and the case surrounding the crash. True crime series Killer Cases also has an instalment surrounding the incident. Episode number 12 in its fourth season is titled 'Murder on Wheels' and also focuses on Shirilla. UK viewers can still watch the episode at no extra cost and can find it streaming free on Channel 4.
The Crash is streaming on Netflix.
