The Prince of Wales delivered a delightful surprise to staff at a traditional Cornish inn last Thursday, when he stopped by for a pub lunch and left a remarkably generous tip.
A Royal Surprise for Mere Locals
Prince William was in the town of Mere in Wiltshire conducting official Duchy of Cornwall business when he and several associates decided to call in to The Walnut Tree Inn. The staff had been expecting a booking for nine people made a week in advance, but they were completely unaware they would be hosting royalty.
"Everyone was a bit shocked when the Prince of Wales walked in," admitted William Friend-James, the owner of the establishment. The royal party was seated at two separate tables, with the Prince's three security guards at one and William and five others having a working lunch at another.
The Royal Lunch Order
The future monarch opted for a classic pub meal, enjoying a homemade burger and fries costing £18.95, which he washed down with a lemonade. Others in his party chose the homemade pie and the sea bass. The group remained at the pub for approximately 90 minutes, combining business with a casual dining experience.
During the visit, bar staff member Lisa James, along with regulars Nick Lowe and Gary Fermor, seized a chance for a memento. Initially, security guards declined a photo request, but when Prince William walked to the restrooms by himself, Lisa asked him directly. The heir to the throne happily obliged, pausing for a photograph with the delighted staff and patrons.
A Generous Gesture and Lasting Impression
At the conclusion of the 90-minute visit, the royal security team settled the bill. To the staff's further astonishment, they also left a substantial £75 tip. Prince William's attire for the low-key visit was described as a smart grey jumper, blue jeans, and a pair of green wellies, having just visited a nearby Duchy estate.
"It was a great pleasure to host him," said a pleased Owner, William Friend-James. The Walnut Tree Inn, with a history dating back to around 1840, has now added a modern royal chapter to its long story, having been redeveloped twice, most recently in 2005.
