Prince Louis, the youngest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales, celebrates his eighth birthday tomorrow. Born on April 23, 2018, he has become a fan favourite for his cheeky antics at public events, often stealing the spotlight from his older siblings.
According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, this birthday marks a bittersweet moment for William and Kate as their 'baby' grows up. Bond told the Mirror that the couple likely feels a 'tinge of sadness' seeing their youngest child become more independent, signalling the end of the baby stage for the family.
Bond noted that Louis has matured in recent public appearances, such as at the Easter service in Windsor, where he wore a suit and tie and behaved impeccably. 'There were no mischievous antics, no tongue poking out at the cameras,' she said, adding that Louis now seems more aware of his public role and may feel embarrassed by attention.
Despite his growing composure, Bond expects Louis to appear at more royal engagements alongside his siblings, while William and Kate continue to prioritise their children's privacy and normal upbringing. 'They look like great kids – a credit to their devoted parents,' she said.
On his birthday, which falls on the second day of the school term, Bond predicts the family will still make a fuss, possibly with a small party, barbecue, or trampolining – a favourite activity. As for gifts, she suggested a new drum kit or board games, given Louis's known interests.
Bond also highlighted the challenge of ensuring Louis does not feel like the 'spare' to his older brother Prince George, who is second in line to the throne. 'As Louis comes up to his eighth birthday, he is going to realise that his big brother is the kingpin,' she said, acknowledging the delicate family dynamics.
