The Duke of Sussex has been condemned for a recent television cameo that critics have labelled insensitive and ill-timed, highlighting a stark contrast with the official duties of the Royal Family back in the UK.
A Surprise Appearance Sparks Backlash
Prince Harry made an unexpected appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, broadcast in the United States. During the segment, he participated in a comedy sketch where he portrayed himself auditioning to become a 'Christmas prince' in a fictional Hallmark-style film.
When host Stephen Colbert questioned why a real prince would want such a role, Harry quipped: "You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you're clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?" He later added a political jab, stating "Really? I hear you elected a king," in an apparent reference to former President Donald Trump and the 'No Kings' protests.
Royal Experts Question 'Painful' Timing and Motive
The brief appearance has drawn significant criticism, particularly from seasoned royal commentators. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told the Mirror she was baffled by Harry's decision to participate.
"I can’t for the life of me think why Harry chose to do this. What was in it for him?" Bond said. She pointed out the unfortunate timing, as the skit aired while his father, King Charles, was hosting the German president for a historic state banquet at Windsor.
Bond identified a "painful irony" in the sketch's content, noting it depicted "a Prince looking for a role and willing to do anything to secure one." She emphasised the stark contrast between "Harry larking around as a LA celebrity and the dignity of his family back home exercising their soft power."
Calls for Titles to be Reviewed Amid Ongoing Tensions
The criticism extended beyond mere timing. Jennie Bond concluded the appearance was a "bad choice" and advised Harry to "stick to your charity work and campaigning on issues you care about" rather than pursuing showbusiness.
Her views were echoed by Tom Sykes, editor of the Royalist newsletter, who suggested that Harry's titles should be reviewed. The call aims to clarify to the American public that his views and comments are personal and do not reflect the stance of the British Royal Family, especially given his political remark about Trump, who recently enjoyed a state visit with King Charles.
The incident, which occurred on 6th December 2025, has reignited debates about the Duke of Sussex's post-royal career choices and their perceived impact on the monarchy's reputation.
