Prince George turns 13 today and will begin at Eton College in September as a full-time boarding student. While the young prince is reportedly excited, the experience may be more challenging than that of his father, Prince William, due to the prevalence of social media.
Social media poses new risks
Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told Page Six: “The biggest challenge won’t be academics or making friends. It’ll be balancing Prince George’s privacy with the reality that every classmate has TikTok.”
She added: “William and [his brother] Harry attended before social media transformed adolescence. George won’t have that luxury.”
George currently does not have a phone, but will be surrounded by students who use social media, creating security and privacy threats.
Enhanced security measures
Schofield explained: “It’s protecting his privacy in an age where something can go viral in seconds. The risks today aren’t just about someone physically approaching the future king.”
She continued: “Digital exposure, drones, social media, and the speed at which information spreads all complicate the security picture. That means Prince George’s protection will almost certainly be more sophisticated even if it’s designed to remain largely invisible.”
George's siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, will remain at Lambrook School until they turn 13.
