Muse frontman Matt Bellamy has filed for divorce from his wife Elle Evans just two days after their seventh wedding anniversary, and is seeking sole custody of their two children.
Divorce filing details
The 48-year-old musician submitted a divorce petition with the Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday 12 August, citing "irreconcilable differences". The date of separation in the filings was listed as "to be determined", though the couple were thought to have split sometime last year.
The filings also state that Bellamy is seeking sole custody of their daughter Lovella, 6, and son George, 2. He has asked the judge to award spousal support to Evans, as agreed in the prenup they signed in 2019.
Evans vows to fight
In a statement to TMZ, Evans vowed to fight for custody of their children and said the divorce was a "long time coming" as she felt Bellamy had made the marriage "unbearable".
Bellamy previously told the i Paper: "It's one of those situations that involves something that people wouldn't normally think it is. It was a set of really unexpected circumstances. It's the kind of thing no one really prepares for in life. It threw me off, and I had to prioritise looking after the kids and creating stability at home."
He added that music became his "lifeline" and that his most recent album was the "easiest" for him to make, as writing would "pour out of" him and was a form of "catharsis".
Relationship history
Bellamy and Evans began dating 11 years ago, after meeting on the set of a music video for the Muse song 'Mercy'. They got engaged in 2017 and married on 10 August 2019 in Malibu.
Their daughter was born a year later, and in 2024 they welcomed their son. Reports of a split began circulating in February this year, suggesting they had separated in summer 2025. Their last public appearance together was in March 2025, at the premiere of MobLand in London.
Bellamy previously dated actress Kate Hudson from 2010 to 2014. They got engaged in 2011 but never married, and share a son, Bingham, born in July 2011.
In 2022, Hudson spoke on a podcast with Josh Smith about the breakup, saying: "I think that's when things started changing for me — when I started taking far more accountability for my own s***." She added: "That was when it started to shift because that's where I think you find your power. When you realize how imperfect we all are, when you're OK with that, it's very liberating."
