Secret Wedding Planned for Mel C and Chris Dingwall
Mel C, the 52-year-old singer known as Sporty Spice, is reportedly set to marry her partner Chris Dingwall in a secret wedding this weekend, according to multiple reports. The couple, who went public with their relationship in 2024, have not formally announced any engagement or wedding plans, but the Daily Mail claims they are ready to say “I do.”
Spice Girls Reunion Minus Victoria Beckham
All members of the Spice Girls are expected to attend the wedding, marking a reunion 30 years after the release of their hit song “Wannabe.” However, Victoria Beckham is said to be unable to attend as she is currently in the US with her husband David Beckham for the FIFA World Cup finals, which take place on Sunday 19 July. A source told the Daily Mail: “Everyone is quite confused that Sporty Spice is having her wedding on the eve of the FIFA world cup final.”
Mel C’s Changing Views on Marriage
Mel C, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm, had previously insisted that marriage was not for her, especially after her parents’ divorce when she was three. In 2022, she told the Sunday Times: “I’ve never, never wanted to marry. Maybe marriage works for some people, but maybe to think it works for the majority is an old-fashioned notion.” However, in a January interview with the same newspaper, she revealed she was considering marriage for the first time with Dingwall, saying: “You know what? [Marriage is] something I didn't think would be part of my story. But I'm so happy with Chris. Maybe it is something that will be in my life. I just think, just do all the things. Do you know what I mean? Have all the experiences.”
Relationship and Future Plans
The couple met on celebrity dating app Raya, as Mel revealed on the Life Uncut podcast. Describing Dingwall in a May interview with The Telegraph, she said: “He’s very laid-back. He’s loads of fun... We have very similar personalities and lifestyles.” The source also suggested that Mel might move to Australia with Dingwall in due course, as she already works on The Voice Australia and her daughter Scarlett, 17, will be off to university at the end of the year.
30th Anniversary of Wannabe
The Spice Girls celebrated 30 years since the release of “Wannabe” on Wednesday 15 July, with each member sharing posts on Instagram. At the Nordoff And Robbins Silver Clef Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, where Mel was honoured with the global impact award, she recalled seeing the song in shops and said: “It was so exciting, because it was everything we dreamed of. We knew exactly what we wanted to achieve but nobody imagined the scale [of what] we went on to do. We went out, we conquered the world. We were told that we couldn't, and we wouldn't. But we did.” “Wannabe” became one of the most iconic songs of its era, selling more than eight million copies worldwide. The Standard has contacted Mel C’s representative for comment.
