Meghan Markle's 'Cringeworthy' Title Introduction Sparks Backlash

A public relations expert has issued a stark warning that a recent action by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex could cause significant damage to her public reputation. The controversy stems from a claim made in a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar, where the journalist reported that upon Meghan's arrival, a house manager formally announced her as 'Meghan, Duchess of Sussex', despite only three people being present.

PR Expert Labels Incident 'Painfully Performative'

Renae Smith, founder and director of PR firm The Atticism, did not hold back in her criticism when speaking to the Express. She described the revelation as not only 'cringeworthy' but also 'painfully performative' for those who witnessed it. Smith asserted that the incident was undoubtedly planned, stating, "There is no universe in which something like that happens spontaneously. She either agreed to it or requested it. Either way, it is tone deaf."

She further explained that it is these kinds of actions, rather than major publicity campaigns, that truly shape public perception. From a public relations standpoint, Smith characterised the move as "messy (and the cringiest of cringe)" and suggested it contributes to an image of Meghan being "confused, reactive and completely disconnected from what actually works for her." Smith concluded that inconsistency is what hurts her public image the most.

Royal Protocol Breached in 'Silly' Stunt

The PR expert's views were strongly echoed by royal commentator and etiquette expert Richard Fitzwilliams. He confirmed to the Daily Mail that the announcement represented a clear breach of royal protocol. Mr Fitzwilliams remarked that the situation, "would make a wonderful skit in the South Park series", adding that it "speaks volumes... about the importance Meghan attaches to her royal status."

He clarified the correct procedure, explaining that according to guidance from Buckingham Palace and etiquette authority Debrett's, it is the visitor who is normally announced to the royal, not the other way around. Introductions to royals are formal 'presentations', where only the name of the person being presented is stated. Therefore, the journalist should have been announced to Meghan. Mr Fitzwilliams stated that breaking this protocol ultimately "makes her look silly."

The incident has caused a considerable stir online, with royal watchers and commentators uniting in their criticism of the Duchess's actions, suggesting a growing disconnect between her desired image and public reception.
