Meghan Markle was reportedly taken aback by the difference between Prince Harry's living quarters and those of his brother, Prince William, during a visit to Kensington Palace early in their relationship.
Royal biographer Robert Jobson claims the Duchess of Sussex was surprised by the contrast between the brothers' homes, according to RadarOnline. Meghan reportedly believed Harry deserved greater privileges as a member of the Royal Family.
Contrasting royal residences
At the time, Prince Harry lived in Nottingham Cottage, a modest two-bedroom home within the palace grounds. Meanwhile, William and Catherine occupied the much larger 20-room Apartment 1A.
In his book Catherine, The Princess of Wales, Jobson wrote that Meghan was "taken aback" by the difference in the homes. Jobson also claimed that Meghan understood Prince William being the heir to the throne, but that she also believed Harry should have more as a prince.
Harry's own reflections
In Prince Harry's 2023 memoir, Spare, he said: "I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed." He described Nottingham Cottage by saying, "Nott Cott was no palace."
The couple met in 2016 and married in 2018. They stepped down from their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the USA, where they lived for six years.
Return to the UK
At the end of August, the Sussexes returned to the UK with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and are now reportedly living in the Cotswolds.
The pair are said to have been "surprised" by a recent letter in which King Charles clarified that the couple should be treated as "private citizens" after moving back to the United Kingdom, a spokesperson for the Sussexes said. The Lord Chamberlain, the most senior officer of the British royal household, said it is "well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family."
