Meghan Markle's five-word verdict on UK return in Nottingham

The Duchess of Sussex has given a five-word verdict on her return to the UK during her first public appearance since relocating to the country last summer. Meghan Markle stepped out in Nottingham today for a day of engagements with her husband, Prince Harry.

Meghan, dressed in burgundy from head to toe, spoke to well-wishers outside the Community Recording Studio who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the couple. The Sussexes went on an impromptu, 20-minute walkabout where they took selfies, gave hugs and shook hands with fans.

Crowd welcomes the couple

The crowd cheered as the couple got out of a dark-coloured Range Rover, before one woman shouted: “We love you, Duchess Meghan, we love you.”

Meghan was caught telling a fan about being back in Britain: “It’s good to be back.” Elsewhere, she turned her attention to the weather, telling one member of the public who had gathered in the sunshine: “Nice, the weather is so wonderful. It’s so fun, so fun.”

Fans share their support

Abigail Heckford, 22, visited as part of a college project. She said: “It’s a big news event. It’s a big thing for somewhere I grew up. I did think there would be more people here.”

Nicola Taylor, 21, of Nottingham, with pal Lisa Marie, 21, said: “This is the first time, as we didn’t see them in 2017. Have liked them since secondary school, Harry and Meghan, for quite some time, and it’s an opportunity to come see them. I will say hello and welcome.”

A special gift for the children

Nichola, of Nottingham, arrived early and gave Meghan and Harry a unicorn balloon. She said: “I can just go show our complete support for Harry and Meghan; they’ve got children, I’ve got children, and I brought something I thought the children would like. Harry said, ‘How do you know she likes children?’ and I said, ‘All children like unicorns’. I know they get a lot of stick, and it’s not justified. We love them and show support; they are always welcome. I know Harry has a lot of love for Nottingham.”
