Meghan Markle is set to face a “tough challenge” in the UK when she relocates here in a matter of days, a royal expert has said. Last week, it was revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, alongside their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will move to Britain before the end of the month.
The motive for the move is unknown, however it is believed the couple have already found a private home and have their children enrolled in British schools. While Harry is likely to carry out charity work during his time in the UK, it is unclear what Meghan will do, with rumours that acting could be on the cards.
Expert says Meghan faces harder challenge than Harry
However, an American royal expert has said that she faces a harder challenge than her husband, especially as she will be in the shadow of a very senior royal. Talking to The Daily Express, John McDermott - Caloroga Shark Media co-founder and creator of the "Palace Intrigue" podcast - said that while Harry is still “loved in the UK”, this is not necessarily the case for Meghan, who may be compared to Princess Catherine, who she is not on talking terms with.
He said: “My sense is that Harry is still loved in the UK, people may be frustrated with him, but if the “old Harry” is out and about (the funny, relaxed, very natural public figure people remember) I think he'll be welcomed back.
“And over time, perhaps we could even see some version of Harry as the wingman to King William, although obviously there's a lot that would have to happen between the brothers first.
“Meghan is different. I'd say she's more popular in the United States than she is in Britain, and returning to the UK presents a much tougher challenge for her.”
Comparison with Princess Catherine
He continued: “She's going to have to turn on the charm while inevitably being compared with Princess Catherine, the future Queen. That's a very difficult shadow for anyone to live in.”
While Meghan may be compared to Catherine upon her UK return, the Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales will not lead similar lives to those they did when Meghan last lived in the UK. This is because Meghan and Harry won’t be working royals, unlike the last time they lived in Britain.
Private citizens in the UK
This means whatever work they carry out will not represent the monarchy. It is believed King Charles, who welcomes the news that his son and grandchildren will be back in the UK, is adamant that they will stay private citizens.
Harry and Meghan have yet to comment on their relocation, reports suggest they will keep their Montecito mansion in California.
