Lorraine Kelly sends support to Michael Palin after fall

Lorraine Kelly sent a heartfelt message to Sir Michael Palin after the Monty Python star suffered a fall and injured himself. The 83-year-old was due to appear at various locations across the UK this month to promote his travel book, but those shows have now been postponed.

Statement on the fall

In a statement released on Instagram, Sir Michael revealed he had fractured some ribs and his pelvis. He wrote: "My accident was quite unsensational, a slip in the family bathroom where I've walked for 58 years.

"I fell heavily on my left side, resulting in three fractured ribs and a minor pelvic fracture. The recovery of bone fractures takes a long time, especially when you're 83. It was a comedy fall with no audience there to see it. I shall stick to fish slapping dances from now on. Sincere apologies to everyone who has already put in a lot of work on the tour. I'd also like to say a huge thanks to the NHS for their incredible care."

Tour postponed

Sir Michael's official website informed fans that it was with 'great regret' the UK tour was being postponed, advising that 'rescheduled dates' would be announced as soon as possible. A statement read: "Michael apologises to everyone who bought tickets and thanks you for your understanding, and can't wait to see you on the rescheduled date."

Speaking about the fall on her ITV show, Lorraine highlighted how the actor and writer was on the programme last week to discuss his book. She commented: "Always a delight to have him on the show. It's an account of his tour of the Philippines.

"Well, very sad news this morning, he's had to cancel the rest of his book tour after a fall left him with three broken ribs and a fractured pelvis."

Support from fans and colleagues

After reading out his statement, she added: "We obviously are sending Sir Michael our very best wishes. Hope he gets better soon because he is so important to the world, to be honest."

Supporters were swift to respond to Sir Michael's post, with numerous people sending their best wishes, including Lauren Laverne, who commented: "So sorry to hear this and sending love and best wishes for a swift recovery to Michael x"

One person posted: "Michael Palin is a global treasure and must be protected at all costs." Another added: "Get well soon!"

Meanwhile, the Michael Palin Centre responded: "Oh dear! That does not sound ideal. Glad to hear you are being looked after. Wishing you a swift recovery, with love and best wishes from all at the Michael Palin Centre."

Lorraine continues weekdays on ITV from 9am.
