King Charles has had one of his toughest years yet, with 2026 bringing challenge after challenge for the monarchy. The Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor scandals, Prince Harry's dramatic UK return, and Earl Charles Spencer's damning book have all caused stress for the Royal Family and, therefore, the King. At the age of 77, this stress is the last thing the monarch, who is still undergoing cancer treatment, needs.
One royal could take some of the load
While much of the stress brought to his door is out of the Royal Family's control, royal reporter Jasmine Carey argues that one royal could take away just some of the load: his oldest son and heir, Prince William. The Prince of Wales could technically take one big source of the monarch's worry and resolve it for good by forgiving his estranged brother, Prince Harry.
It is well-reported that years ago, an exasperated King Charles - when he was still a prince - asked his two bickering sons not to make his final years a misery with their rift. His heartfelt plea seemed to fall on deaf ears, as his sons have not been on talking terms for some time.
A weight off the King's shoulders
While Harry has expressed a desire to reconcile, William has not. If William agreed, the royal rift between the princes could end for good, and King Charles' worry about his sons' relationship could be fixed. That would be a big weight off the almost 78-year-old King's shoulders, and having just one less thing to worry about could make all the difference.
It would be one less problem to think about, one less headache, and one less family issue and drama hovering over the head of the monarchy. With everything else going on, a reconciliation between Harry and William would be a relief.
Steps toward reconciliation
Carey acknowledges that William cannot simply call Harry and all will be well again. There would need to be steps for this to happen, or at least an apology from Harry to start. William is not just being difficult by not talking to his younger brother; he is protecting himself and his family from the drama that the Duke of Sussex has brought on them over the years since quitting royal life.
Carey asks whether anyone would rush to forgive a brother who accused their family of being racist, wrote a book detailing their biggest arguments, and criticised the life they had been brought up in together. However, William could at least be open to reconciliation, easing the stress on his father. No one is asking William to be best buddies with Harry again, but even if communication was open just a little bit, if they shared a text or two and put the worst of the rift behind them, it would be better than nothing.
