King Charles demonstrated a commitment to duty by attending the opening show of London Fashion Week, mere hours after the arrest of his brother, Prince Andrew. The monarch's appearance, which was not pre-announced, drew audible gasps and cheers from the public as he arrived in a state limousine in central London.
A Focus on Sustainability Amidst Turmoil
During the event, the King appeared relaxed and engaged, sharing jokes and laughter with renowned designer Stella McCartney. McCartney, who has known Charles for years, greeted him with a kiss and humorously suggested he should spend time with her father, former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.
The designer was showcasing sustainable British innovation, including a plant-based feather used to decorate a dress, which captured the King's interest. In a symbolic gesture, Charles presented McCartney with a scarf, and they posed together for media photographs, with McCartney playfully instructing, "Let's do a nice photo. Ready, OK, come on, cheesy smile."
Royal Support and Public Backlash
Earlier in the day, the King issued a statement emphasizing that "the law must take its course" and reaffirming the royal family's dedication to duty and service. His efforts to navigate the monarchy through the crisis stemming from Prince Andrew's association with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein are being bolstered by the Prince and Princess of Wales.
However, the royal family's reputation is under strain. A recent Ipsos poll, conducted from February 13 to 16 with 1,086 adults, reveals a significant decline in public favourability ratings. Prince William's rating fell eight points to 63%, Princess Kate dropped seven points to 62%, Princess Anne decreased nine points to 53%, and King Charles's rating declined five points to 48%. Prince Andrew's rating stands at a mere 5%, down four points.
Fashion and Duty Intertwined
McCartney was announced as an ambassador for the King's Sustainable Markets Initiative, a project founded in 2020 to promote global sustainability. Expressing her pride, she said, "I feel very proud to be the first ambassador of fashion for them and I'm very excited to do great things with the honour." When questioned about the timing of the King's visit amidst ongoing events, she diplomatically replied, "good try."
The King took a front-row seat for a show by British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker, enjoying models in stylish black mini dresses and elegant outfits, accompanied by live music. Meanwhile, Prince Andrew spent the day being interrogated by officers on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
As the King departed, a member of the press shouted a question, but he did not respond, maintaining a focus on his public engagements. This event highlights the delicate balance the monarchy must strike between personal crises and public responsibilities.
