Royal Mail has announced a significant update to its online parcel delivery service, aiming to simplify the process for customers sending packages across the UK. The changes were unveiled in a social media video on Facebook, where the postal service detailed a revamped online experience designed to save time and reduce hassle.
New Online Postage Experience
According to Royal Mail, the updated website now prioritises the most popular postage options, making it quicker for customers to find what they need. A new feature called the Postage Builder has been introduced, which recommends the best services based on the parcel's size, weight, delivery speed, and any extras required, such as tracking, guaranteed delivery, a photo on delivery, or a signature.
A Royal Mail team member explained in the video: "We've made it easier than ever to find and purchase the perfect postage option for your parcels. Next time you're sending something, you'll now see the most popular options first. So, if you're in a hurry, you're only a few clicks away from getting your parcel ready to send."
The process involves telling the system the parcel's dimensions and weight, how quickly it needs to arrive, and any additional services. The Postage Builder then suggests suitable options, allowing users to click on their preferred choice, add extra details, and proceed to checkout.
Solar-Powered Parcel Postboxes
In related news, Royal Mail recently unveiled new solar-powered parcel postboxes, designed to make sending parcels even more convenient. Announced in April, these postboxes accept medium-sized, pre-labelled parcels—the largest items ever accepted through a postbox—as well as standard letters.
The first of these innovative postboxes has been installed in Belfast, with plans to roll out approximately 600 units across the UK over the next six months. Locations include Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Tyneside, with installations in town centres, new housing developments, and outside Royal Mail Delivery Offices.
Royal Mail emphasised that while these new postboxes are for larger parcels, regular postboxes remain suitable for small, postable parcels that fit through a letterbox. The solar-powered design ensures sustainability, aligning with broader environmental goals.
These updates reflect Royal Mail's commitment to improving customer experience and adapting to changing postal needs. The revamped online platform and new postbox infrastructure aim to streamline parcel sending, whether for personal or business use.
