Prince Harry's chances of a public reunion with his father, King Charles, at next year's Invictus Games could be undermined by a calendar clash, a royal commentator has claimed.
The Duke of Sussex's relationship with the Royal Family has been strained since he stepped back from royal duties six years ago, but recent events have sparked hopes of a reconciliation. Harry returned to the UK in July for a five-day visit linked to his patronages, including the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games in Birmingham. He is also expected back in September for another charity event.
During his July visit, Harry held a private meeting with his father, Queen Camilla, and his own family, including Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. It was the first time the Sussex children had seen their grandfather in four years.
Invictus Games Organisers Plan to Invite King
The Mirror reports that Invictus Games organisers plan to invite the King to take part in either the opening or closing ceremony and to visit sporting events to meet competitors. Father and son last appeared together publicly at the late Queen Elizabeth's funeral in September 2022 and her Platinum Jubilee celebration earlier that summer.
However, royal expert Svar Nanan-Sen of GB News said the timing of Harry's visit for the Games in Birmingham could clash with Queen Camilla's 80th birthday, potentially jeopardising a family reunion.
Calendar Clash on Queen Camilla's Birthday
The Invictus Games are scheduled to run from July 10 to July 17, 2027, with the Queen's birthday falling on July 17. Nanan-Sen noted: “The closing ceremony of the Invictus Games on July 17th falls on Queen Camilla’s birthday, meaning there is little to no chance of any senior royals attending Harry’s event.”
He added: “The calendar clash is not an ideal situation for the Duke of Sussex, King Charles or Queen Camilla; however, Harry will remain hopeful that the monarch will show public support for his organisation during its seven days in the West Midlands.”
Nanan-Sen also suggested the King could attend the opening ceremony on July 10 if he wished.
