Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'Rock' James Holt Quits in Latest Staff Blow
Harry and Meghan's Key Aide James Holt Quits

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been dealt a significant setback with the departure of James Holt, a key advisor described as their 'rock'. This exit marks the latest in a series of high-profile staff changes that have plagued the couple's operations since their move to the United States.

The Departure of a Trusted Confidant

James Holt, who served as the Executive Director of the couple's Archewell Foundation, has resigned. His tenure spanned pivotal moments, from the Sussexes' controversial exit from the UK in 2020 to the publication of Prince Harry's memoir, Spare. Initially joining as their PR representative in 2019, Holt relocated to California with them, featuring in their Netflix documentary to discuss their work.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, Holt cited a desire to return to the UK with his family. "After five incredible years in Los Angeles, it's time for my family to return to London," he said, praising his collaborative work with Meghan. He confirmed a transition period would follow his departure.

A Pattern of High Staff Turnover

Holt's exit is not an isolated incident. The couple has developed a reputation for a revolving door of aides, with at least eleven publicists and senior staff having left their employ since their transatlantic move.

Recent departures include:

  • Meredith Maines, Chief Communications Officer, who left after just ten months.
  • Emily Robinson, Director of Communications, departed after a mere three months, with a source suggesting conditions were "pretty horrible."
  • Ashley Hansen, Global Press Secretary (May 2022 - October 2024), left to launch her own firm.
  • Kyle Boulia, Press Secretary (April 2024 - June 2025), noted his work on global launches with Netflix and Spotify.
  • Charlie Gipson, European Communications Director (April 2024 - July 2025).
  • Toya Holness, served as Press Secretary and later Head of Communications before leaving after 11 months.

Perhaps most notably, Prince Harry's former chief of staff, Josh Kettler, lasted only three months in the role in 2024, though he publicly defended the couple as "dedicated and hardworking."

Reputation and Operational Challenges

This consistent churn has fuelled a narrative of a challenging work environment. Reports in outlets like the Hollywood Reporter have carried claims that Meghan "belittles people" and "doesn't take advice," allegedly earning her the moniker "Duchess Difficult." A Vanity Fair cover story this year further scrutinised their operations.

Other staff who have moved on include Christine Schirmer, a Senior Communications Advisor, and Miranda Barbot, who reportedly shifted from a communications role to Chief of Staff. Deesha Tank, a key PR contact from 2022 to June 2025, now works for Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty company.

The repeated restructuring at Archewell and the couple's private office raises questions about the stability and long-term strategy of their commercial and philanthropic ventures in the US, as they continue to shape their post-royal careers.
