Prince Harry and Meghan Markle felt it was "them against the world" as they chose to keep a dark family secret hidden despite facing fierce public criticism, a royal expert has claimed.
For years, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex endured intense scrutiny over Meghan's fractured relationship with her estranged father, Thomas Markle. The public narrative frequently painted the Duchess as an ungrateful daughter who had callously abandoned her ailing father, peaking when Thomas publicly pleaded to see his grandchildren following a leg amputation.
Revelation Flips the Narrative
However, a shocking recent revelation completely flipped the narrative. The Duchess claimed that her decision to sever ties was not an act of cruelty, but a strict protective measure after learning of a massive police probe into dark allegations surrounding her father.
Thomas Markle Snr is currently at the centre of an investigation after his son, Thomas Markle Jnr, claimed to have found a stash of child sex abuse images at his father's former home in Cebu. Thomas Snr has furiously slammed the claims as "sick lies" and vehemently denies any wrongdoing.
Silence Under Pressure
While the Sussexes knew the grim reality behind the estrangement, they chose to suffer the public backlash in silence rather than expose the distressing details to the world, according to an author.
Duncan Larcombe has weighed in on the immense pressure the couple reportedly faced behind closed doors as they formed a united front to protect their young children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Speaking to New Magazine about the couple's stoic decision to stay tight-lipped, Mr Larcombe explained: "I suspect they made a decision that they would never be the ones to leak the story, even though I'm sure at times they would have been tempted, especially when Meghan was under attack from all sides."
Highlighting the isolating toll the secret took on their marriage, he added: "It must have added to the feeling that it was them against the world."
Meghan's Statement
Meghan said in a statement last month: "I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed. In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me.
"It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father, and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.
"I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications' distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice not to allow him to have contact with our children was for one reason: to protect them. I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.
"Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children."
