Earl Charles Spencer has admitted he speaks more to Prince Harry than to Prince William, describing himself as "an elderly uncle" who is "not on anyone's side."
The uncle of Prince William and Prince Harry made the confession during an appearance on the podcast Next Question With Katie Couric, following the release of his book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
Uncle's Honest Words
Earl Spencer told Katie Couric: "I'm just an elderly uncle, really. I've always taken the view since Diana died that I'm there if needed, and I'm if not.... I think these are two men in their 40s and they can make of me what they want or not. I'm not on anyone's side, but I think there are occasions when Harry may need me more."
He added: "So, I hear a lot more from Harry, but that doesn't mean I'm totally equal. I'm just their mother's brother, you know?"
Book's Controversy
The book contains accusations about King Charles, including claims he sounded like a "lottery winner" when Princess Diana died in a car crash. Buckingham Palace released a statement acknowledging how grief can cloud memory.
The Earl has clarified that he told both princes about the book at the same time.
Family Visits
Earl Spencer hosted Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet at his Althorp home this summer, when the family were visiting the UK from California. It is not known when the Earl last saw Prince William, nor whether he has seen Harry's family since their return to the UK.
Neither Prince Harry nor Prince William has commented on their uncle's book since its release. Reports suggest Harry is fine with the book, while some sources say William is "furious."
