Beach Boys fans split over Mike Love's on-stage health

The Beach Boys have returned to the road after months away, and footage of 85-year-old Mike Love sitting in a chair at the front of the stage has sparked a fierce debate among fans over his health and stage presence.

The veteran musician has been seen seated during the iconic band's performances, with the footage prompting a mixed response online. While some fans have questioned whether he should still be touring, others have defended his decision to continue performing, noting that he is still taking to the stage at an age when many people have long since retired.

Fans worried for the star

One social media user appeared to reference Love's long-running feud with former bandmate Brian Wilson, writing: "Guess Mick won that beef huh." Another fan was less sympathetic, posting: "Jesus! Don’t taint your legacy, fucking retire. Someone misspent their money."

Others questioned the decision to have Love perform in his current circumstances, with Now We Rise writing: "That’s terrible to put him out there like that." One viewer compared the scenes to a moment involving Wilson, who died in 2025, writing: "He's just kind of there. This is even sadder than seeing Brian sitting at his piano gazing off into space mid song." Another commenter took aim at the staging, joking: "Is he wearing a life jacket? Hahaha"

Support and criticism

The footage also prompted some more brutal comparisons, with one person writing: "Weekend at Bernie’s." Others were more supportive of the singer's determination to keep performing. One fan wrote: "85 years old and still touring. I pulled a muscle last week reaching for the TV remote. Absolute legend."

Another added: "I love Love, but there's no shame in knowing when it's time to call it a career." The debate also turned to whether Love genuinely wants to continue appearing on stage. One social media user pushed back against claims of elder abuse, saying they had found a quote in which the singer explained that performing rejuvenates him because he gets to be on stage and spend time with the audience.

The commenter went on to criticise Love, writing: "He’s a total a******, and I have no pity for him. He is the elder abuser, and therefore a masochist."

Continuing to perform

The divided reaction comes as Love continues to perform with The Beach Boys, the legendary group behind hits including Good Vibrations, Wouldn't It Be Nice and California Girls.
