Royal biographer Andrew Lownie has declared that the connections between Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein have plunged the Royal Family into a more severe crisis than the abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936. Speaking at the Oxford Literary Festival, Lownie emphasised that public outrage over the former prince's conduct and his ties to Epstein exceeds the reaction to Edward's decision to step down from the throne.
Comparing Royal Scandals: Abdication Versus Epstein Links
Andrew Lownie, author of 'Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York', drew a stark comparison between the current turmoil and the historical abdication. He described Edward VIII's abdication as a 'three-day wonder', noting that the public did not fully engage with the details at the time. Lownie highlighted that Edward's support for Nazis was not widely known, and he resigned voluntarily to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee he loved.
In contrast, Prince Andrew has been stripped of his royal titles and honours as allegations about his relationship with Epstein continue to surface. Andrew, aged 66, was released under investigation on February 19 after being held for 11 hours in police custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The former Duke of York was also evicted from Royal Lodge in Windsor by his brother, King Charles, in the aftermath of the Epstein scandal.
Legal and Public Perception Challenges
Lownie suggested that it is unlikely Andrew will face prosecution, speculating that the royals would not want him in court where he might claim, 'Everyone knew about this - why am I being penalised?' This statement underscores the potential legal and reputational risks for the monarchy.
Recently, Andrew was spotted for the first time since his arrest, taking a solitary 90-minute dog walk near Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where he now resides. This appearance followed photos of him slumped in a Range Rover after his arrest four weeks ago.
Andrew's Royal Styling and Ongoing Investigations
Despite his fall from grace, Andrew appears to cling to royal trappings. Hundreds of removal boxes stamped with 'HRH office', 'HRH sitting room', and 'HRH meeting room' were delivered to his new five-bedroom house, which has been hastily upgraded with security fencing, CCTV, and broadband.
Scotland Yard's chief has confirmed that a 'whole range of sexual allegations' against Andrew are under investigation to determine if they merit a criminal probe. Andrew has been accused of having sex with Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre three times, including when she was 17, after being trafficked by Epstein. However, his arrest last month was specifically for misconduct in public office over claims he shared sensitive information with Epstein while serving as the UK's trade envoy, not for any sex offences.
This unfolding saga, as detailed by Lownie, who also wrote 'Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor', highlights the deepening crisis for the Royal Family, with public anger and legal scrutiny creating a more protracted and damaging situation than the abdication of 1936.
